Polygraph testing for domestic situations

Related Issues: Allegation of Domestic Sexual Harassment

Polygraph testing for suspected infidelity can determine the involvement of a spouse/partner in clandestine emotional and/or sexual relationships.

Polygraph examinations are used extensively for relationship issues, not only to prove ‘cheating’, but also to indicate the truthfulness of one's statements, helping couples rebuild trust lost due to suspicion. A disclosure of infidelity is a traumatic and painful experience for both parties.

However, the uncertainty created by the 'gut feeling' that something is not quite the same as it used to be in a relationship, can be even more painful than the knowledge of infidelity itself.

The ever-present danger of Sexual Transmitted Diseases in today’s society attaches another dimension to unfaithfulness, and places couples and individuals under additional pressure.

Polygraph examination can help determine the fact(s) about partners' extramarital relationships, contacts with "exes", as well as sexual activities over the Internet (visits to pornographic, chat and dating sites).

Polygraph test for infidelity focuses on the single and most important issue, where questions are direct and explicit. The questions are specific, giving no opportunity for any altered interpretation by the examinee.

Some examples of questions asked:

“Did you have sexual intercourse with (name) on (date)?”

“On (date), did you have any sexual contact with (name)?”

“Have you had any contact with your “ex” since (time/separation/divorce)?”

“Since (date), did you visit any (pornographic, chat and/or dating) sites?”

To know whether or not a Polygraph examination might be valuable, a good approach is to make a solid assessment of one’s relationship. This set of questions can be used as a short guide to indicate the possibility of extramarital relationships:

  • Has your partner been emotionally, intimately and/or sexually distant recently?
  • Is your partner suddenly seeking excitements, thrills and new hobbies?
  • Does your partner avoid talking about your relationship or future plans?
  • Are there considerable changes in your partners' sexual desire and/or habits?
  • Does your partner have difficulties explaining absenteeism from home?
  • Are there sudden unexplainable financial issues?
  • Does you partner ask for more "free time and space"?
  • Does your partner regularly make excuses when it comes to sexual activity?
  • Do you feel your partner is finding you inadequate and unattractive?
  • Is your partner regularly working long hours and/or staying with friends after work?
  • Is your partner constantly telling you "little white lies"?

The answers to these questions may indicate the possibility of an extramarital affair. However, only a polygraph examination can determine the truth about a partner' infidelity, especially when there are no other (surveillance) evidences.

Importantly, a Polygraph test is not only valuable for proving the existence of an extramarital affair. It can also be very useful in the treatment process by helping to break the cycle of denial. This can be the first step in repairing a relationship.
